There is a long tradition of translating Shakespeare in the Czech lands. Famous writers such as Josef Kajetán Tyl or Josef Václav Sládek helped introduce Shakespeare’s plays to Czech readers. Nowadays, there are other translators following in their footsteps and offering contemporary translations, more accessible to modern readers. Why is Shakespeare so inspiring even centuries after his death? Bridge asked Martin Hilský, the first Czech translator who translated the Complete Works of Shakespeare into Czech.
