A Paintbox of Idioms
Purple prose: Prose means any writing that is not poetry, for example in fiction or journalism. Purple prose is writing that is “over written” – full of melodramatic language, bad metaphors and, often, a lot of clichés.
The pot calling the kettle black: This refers to one person accusing another of doing something wrong, when that person does it too.
Once in a blue moon: Very rarely, only occasionally.
Tickled pink: Very pleased.
To see things through rose-tinted spectacles: When you see things through rose-tinted spectacles, you are optimistic and always see things as better than they are.
Golden boy, golden girl: This means a favourite; someone loved and admired so much that people ignore their weaknesses – though usually only for a short period.
White lie: A small lie that does less harm than the truth.
Grey area: An area of uncertainty, especially in rules or ethics.
To paint the town red: To have a night of wild partying.
White elephant: Something that’s expensive, useless and hard to get rid of.
