PRO TIPS: The Thorny Issue of Tipping

How much to tip? When and why? Tipping is an issue that frustrates, confuses and angers travellers. Here we look at the tipping culture of a few mostly English-speaking countries, although it’s a big issue and this is just the tip of the iceberg.

The Czech Republic

In Czechia, it’s usual to tip in a bar or restaurant. It’s a fairly relaxed system, though: rounding up the bill is fine. Increasingly, people are taking 10% as a guide for how much you  should round up. A larger tip can be a sign of appreciation for someone who goes above and beyond, but really big tips can sometimes be seen as arrogant. On the other hand, if you’re low on cash and can’t give a decent tip, most of the time no one will feel particularly upset.
