Things You (Probably) Didn’t Know About Scotland
Paul Farrington-Douglas (UK)
Three Languages
Scotland is an English-speaking country… kinda. Most of the country’s 5.5 million people speak Scottish English. Some also speak Scots, which you might have seen if you’ve read Scottish poets such as Robert Burns. Scots has the same roots as English but developed differently in Scotland (a bit like Czech and Slovak developed alongside each other). It has some different vocabulary and grammar and doesn’t have standardised spelling. Is it a different language, or “only” a dialect (= nářečí)? Not everyone agrees!
